Bilal Hafeez
Biography
With over 70 peer-reviewed publications, two book chapters and an h-index of 46, Hafeez has built a distinguished career in cancer biology, molecular therapeutics, and the development of transgenic and knockout mouse models for preclinical studies. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Texas Cancer Prevention and Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Institute, and he serves as associate editor for Cell Biology International and Frontiers in Oncology. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵer Award at the Asia International Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Award 2023.
At SDSU, Hafeez's research focuses on the role of dysregulated ribosome biogenesis in gastrointestinal and prostate cancers, with the goal of developing innovative therapeutic strategies to overcome chemotherapy and immunotherapy resistance in solid tumors. His laboratory recently made a significant discovery demonstrating that targeting RPA194 — the catalytic subunit of RNA polymerase I — induces ubiquitin-mediated degradation of mutant p53 and potently suppresses pancreatic tumor growth. Complementing his research, he teaches advanced pharmacology and pathophysiology courses to Pharm.D. and Ph.D. students, bridging laboratory discovery with the clinical knowledge essential to training future leaders in the pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences.

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ and Scholarly Work
Areas of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ
Hafeez's research program focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which dysregulated ribosome biogenesis drives the initiation, progression and therapy resistance of solid tumors, with a primary focus on gastrointestinal cancers — particularly pancreatic and liver cancer — and prostate cancer. His laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach integrating transgenic and knockout mouse models, advanced molecular biology, and preclinical drug evaluation to identify and validate ribosome biogenesis components as novel diagnostic biomarkers and actionable therapeutic targets.
A cornerstone discovery of his research group demonstrated that pharmacological targeting of RPA194, the catalytic subunit of RNA polymerase I, induces ubiquitin-mediated degradation of oncogenic mutant p53 protein and potently suppresses pancreatic tumor growth — findings published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics (2026).
Hafeez's overarching translational goal is to develop new molecular targets and innovative therapeutic strategies, including small-molecule inhibitors of ribosome biogenesis components with direct implications for improving clinical outcomes in patients.
