ADA Accommodations for Visitors and Employees

Visitors

SDSU strives to be accessible to anyone attending university-sponsored events or visiting on campus.

Guests can request accommodations by contacting the office sponsoring the event or by emailing human resources.

Contact the coordinator of the program with any of the following accommodation requests prior to the event. Three weeks advance notice is suggested.

  • Specific dietary needs or programmatic accommodations, (sign language interpreter, alternate format for print information).
  • Wheelchair or other mobility assistive device.

Accessible Parking

Designated accessible parking stalls are provided on campus for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Anyone utilizing an accessible parking stall must display a state-issued disability placard and/or license plate. A state-issued placard is still required in situations regarding short-term or temporary mobility disability or injury.

Individuals will not be granted special parking accommodations without a valid state-issued placard. South Dakota residents needing more information should visit .

Eligibility for Accommodation

You may be eligible if:

  • You have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, including caring for yourself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, breathing, eating, sleeping, walking, talking, etc.
  • You need the accommodation, given your impairment, to perform the essential functions of your position with SDSU or to enjoy the same benefits and privileges of employment at SDSU as nondisabled employees.
  • Your condition or the need for the accommodation is not already known or obvious to SDSU.

Interactive Process

  • The human resources representative will manage the process to ensure fairness, verify your eligibility and help maintain confidentiality regarding your disability.
  • The human resources representative will work with you, your supervisor and other decision-makers to agree on an accommodation. If needed, they will consult with the ADA coordinator to make sure the appropriate accommodation is provided.
  • If an agreement can’t be reached or your request is denied, you can ask the ADA coordinator to review the decision. They will try to resolve the issue through discussion. If that doesn’t work, the request will be forwarded to the Title IX/equal opportunity coordinator for further review, following university and South Dakota Board of Regents policy.
  • The university will always aim to provide your preferred accommodation, but alternative accommodations may be considered based on the university's resources as a whole, not just a single department’s.

  • Requests: To request an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of policies or procedures, email human resources or call 605-688-4128 as soon as possible, preferably seven days before the activity or event.
  • Complaints: Report It.

Grievances and Complaints

Individuals who believe that they have been discriminated against in any education program or activity or employment situation at the university on the Americans with Disabilities Act compliance basis of having a disability, a record of a disability, being regarded as disabled or having association or affiliation with a person who has a disability may file a complaint with the Title IX/equal opportunity coordinator pursuant to and University Policy 4:6.
